Book Review: Overlap by Sean McCabe

Overlap is a book that I would recommend to anyone who is working a full-time job and wanting to start their own business. Sean does a great job of recapping his overlap journey in the first chapter of the book. Part I focuses on finding your passion, Part II focuses on protecting your passion, Part III focuses on investing in your passion, Part IV talks about monetizing your passion and the final chapter focuses on marketing your passion.

For me this book came at the perfect time. I am working part-time and pursing finding it is what I want to do in the music industry. So far my journey in music has looked like this Drummer → Graphic Designer → Web Designer → Band Manager. I’ve also booked my fair share of shows for my own bands and have been the Promoter for some as well. I’ve had a number of people tell me I’d make a good Band Manager. I am going to keep exploring that this year. I intend to reach out to Band Managers I know and ask them for advice and feedback on how I can be the best Band Manager possible.

If you are looking for a book that can help you on your overlap journey this is going to be the best one you can find. Sean did an excellent job of breaking down the step you could take for making money with your passion and avoiding burn out. It was helpful to me that he covers getting your friends and family on board with your passion. Finding support from the people you care about most has a big impact on your life. Also as someone who struggles with pricing, the chapter focused on that was helpful as well.

Just dig into the book and you’ll find at least one thing that helps you on your overlap journey. It is available as an audiobook, eBook, and hardcover as well. I have more time to listen to a book than I do reading one—but like owning the book to reference later or let friends borrow. Start overlapping now!

If you like to hear my friend Deanna and I talk about the book check out this episode of Welcome to Geekdom.
